The TraceWindu Product Passport is a digital tool that allows consumers to verify the origin of their wine. By connecting laboratory analysis with blockchain technology, the system creates a secure and immutable record of the wine’s production history.

The soil’s chemical composition creates a unique “multi-elemental signature” that is absorbed by the vine. ICP-MS technology (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) is used to analyse this signature and scientifically confirm the wine’s geographical origin. This process ensures that the wine in the bottle matches the region stated on the label.

Once the analysis is complete, the results and production data are recorded on a blockchain. This decentralized technology ensures that the record is permanent and cannot be altered or manipulated after the fact.

Consumers can access this verified data by scanning a QR code on the bottle. The scan instantly displays:

  • Origin verification: A status badge confirming the geographical origin has been scientifically tested.
  • Product details: Verified information regarding the vintage, grape varieties, and sustainability practices.
  • Data integrity: Assurance that the information comes directly from the producer and the laboratory.

TraceWindu is a research and innovation project co-funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme. The project focuses on improving traceability in the wine sector through the integration of smart tags, blockchain technology, and advanced analytical chemistry.
